As the body digests grapes nutrition, a lot of fructose is released. The digestive tract breaks down the fructose, but a part of it remains undigested and passes to the gut. Eating large quantities of grapes, dried or as raisins and sultanas, can lead to indigestion. In some cases, it can even cause diarrhea. Those who have fructose intolerance (7) can also experience abdominal pain along with indigestion. People with fructose intolerance should avoid eating grapes as it may even harm the liver and kidney function.


Grape allergies are extremely rare but it is the most serious side effect of grapes. Even touching grape can trigger allergic reactions in some people. Allergy symptoms include hives, red patches, wheezing difficulty in breathing, and sneezing. In severe cases, shortly after eating grapes, the allergic person goes into anaphylactic shock (8).
